Falling For YA

Hello! I'm Emily. I am a YA Book Blogger at Falling For YA, Third Year Law Student at the University of South Dakota, and lover of all things bookish.

Obsidian - Jennifer L. Armentrout I finally decided to read this book after all the crazy hype on Twitter, Goodreads, & other blogs. I felt like everywhere I looked there was a picture of Pepe (who is undeniably a hottie) and someone going on about how great Obsidian was. I really wanted to believe the hype surrounding this book but when I finally got down to reading the story was just okay.

Obsidian follows Katy who has just moved to West Virginia for her senior year. Katy is a likeable enough heroine, she is kind of a stay at home sort of person and she has a book blog (maybe this is the reason bloggers are obsessed?). Katy is still trying to get over the loss of her Father and after being basically forced to go over to the neighbors Katy meets Daemon and Dee, his sister.

I actually liked Dee she is perky, upbeat, and genuinely wants to be Katy’s friend. Dee was independent and didn’t do exactly as Daemon told her. I actually felt like Dee was one of the more realistic characters in this novel and would have liked to have seen more of her. Instead, enter Daemon.

I had a hard time liking Daemon. Don’t get me wrong I like a bad boy as much as the next girl but Daemon was just an ass and no amount of hot bad boy exterior is going to make up for the fact that he is pompous, conceited, and consistently treats Katy like crap. I would have enjoyed the story a lot more if Katy had just told Daemon off, left him alone and found someone else to crush on. I’m really tired of the cliché in YA literature that just because someone is super sexy they can get away with treating people terribly and later be forgiven by the protagonist.

Overall this story was an entertaining and quick read. Obsidian also gets plus points because it has Aliens rather then the stereotypical paranormal creatures. I must admit to that I already purchased the sequel Onyx, so I guess that says something (that I cave to peer pressure?). I’m hoping in the next book Katy grows a bit of a backbone or Daemon changes into a nicer person but we will see!
