Falling For YA

Hello! I'm Emily. I am a YA Book Blogger at Falling For YA, Third Year Law Student at the University of South Dakota, and lover of all things bookish.

Legend - Marie Lu Legend by Marie Lu is set in a not too far off future where the United States has broken apart and the main characters June and Day live in the Republic; A totalitarian society that is kept in check by raw power and secrets.

The world Lu creates is masterfully crafted, I never felt myself grasping for reasons why the society was in existence and I understood the reasons why the 10 year olds had to endure trials. Something about the world just clicked with me and I could easily see our society deteriorating in much the same way. It is definitely a scary future.

I really like both the characters June, and Day. The book alternates perspectives and while this usually gets on my nerves it did not in Legend. I found myself liking to read the voice of Day’s perspective just a little bit more though. I liked Day’s very Robin Hood-esque personality, steal from the rich and give to the deserving. I also loved his fierce loyalty to his family it was something I could relate to.

That is not to say that I did not like June, I also related to her in a different way. I think personality wise I am much more like June then I care to admit! June is regimented, loyal to the Republic, and has this naïveté trust that only someone who has been a “have” rather then a “have not” can attain.

The relationship between Day and June was also something I enjoyed. It was a slow evolving romance that had you really rooting for both of them! Each of the characters had lost so much that I couldn’t bear it if they lost each other as well. It was also wrought with misunderstandings and secrets but that just added to the tension and made me like it even more.

Overall I really loved Legend and can not wait for the next book! This is another great addition to the dystopian genre.
