Falling For YA

Hello! I'm Emily. I am a YA Book Blogger at Falling For YA, Third Year Law Student at the University of South Dakota, and lover of all things bookish.

Shade (Shade, #1) - Jeri Smith-Ready I have been meaning to read this book for ages and when I finally traded for a copy I was so excited to start it! Unfortunately, while I enjoyed the story I didn’t love it, I just liked it.

The Shift happened 16 years ago, those born after this shift can see ghosts. Aura was born 1 minute after the shift. After only a few chapters Aura’s boyfriend Logan has a terrible string of luck and ends up dying, but he comes back. The novel is about Aura dealing with the loss of her boyfriend even though he hasn’t really left, and also discovering why the Shift occurred and her own origins.

Aura was a likeable enough heroine. Despite having to deal with the loss of her boyfriend, his coming back, and a whole host of other problems she remains positive throughout the novel. It wasn’t Aura though that made me like this book it was the boys! I absolutely swooned over Logan and then I swooned over Zachary. I actually couldn’t make up my mind as to who I liked better. Logan’s devotion to Aura at times made my eyes water (so romantic!) but Zachery had the whole Scottish hottie with infinite patience thing working for him.

I guess the one big thing that detracted from this novel was that the latter half of the book became a bit of a court room drama, that felt completely detached from the story and I’m not sure what purpose it served. I spend all day at school dealing with court room drama the last thing I want to do is read about it when I get home. I think if the latter half had focused on why the Shift occurred I would have liked the story a lot more.

Overall, I enjoyed Shift but the ending wasn’t to my liking. I plan on continuing the series because I loved the boys and I’m still wondering why the shift happened and what will happen with Logan, the ending of Shift left me with so many unanswered questions and I think set up a really great start for book 2!
