Discussion: Writing to Mustic

Welcome to another session of Bookish Discussions with Emily! This week I want to talk about writing to music. I have taken a little break from my work in progress to get all my school stuff together since I'm graduating in May *freaks out*! But now that I am getting back in the swing of things I've been listening to my old playlists and I wanted to discuss what other people listen to while they write or what kind of background noise they like to have.
Ambient Noise
Do you like writing at coffee shops but don't feel like putting on real pants today? Or maybe you're like me and writing at coffee shops is completely distracting because you can always find something to look at. Well the internet has provided you with the Coffee shop background sound. I love coffitivity because it gives coffee house, lunchroom, or just background noise to work to without having to leave the house. Studies have also shown this ambient background noise makes you work, stay on task, and can help you be more creative.

Maybe coffee house noise isn't your kind of thing, you would rather work outside in nature. The internet has got you covered there as well! I present to you Rainy day background sound. I like writing to this when I have a sad scene or when the weather changes in my WIP.
Authors and their Music
Recently I am have seen more and more authors on tumblr and their websites posting playlists their for books, characters, or specific scenes. I love this! If I really enjoyed a book then I want to know what the author was listening when they wrote it.

Maggie Stiefvater is my favorite author who posts playlists. I follow her on soundcloud and you can find playlists for Gansey, Adam, Raven Boys III and more! I like listening to her playlists because a lot of our musical tastes match up and I've discovered quite a few artists/songs that I love through her.

Becca Fitzpatrick has also released a playlist for her upcoming book Black Ice which comes out in October. It includes one of my favorites songs Seaside by The Kooks so I'm already biased in to liking this playlist.

These are just two examples do you have any other authors whose playlist you love to listen to? Let me know in the comments!
My Recommendations

My musical tastes are like the oceans tides. One minute I will be in to one thing and within the same day I can find myself hating that same song. It makes for a very long playlist. I'm also not saying my taste in music is good. I enjoy a very eclectic mix that doesn't translate well sometimes, especially because I have a love of rap. I like both the lyrical talent it takes to put together a flow and the hard hitting bass beats that are prevalent in the rap and R&B scene. But since this post is about what music you write to I thought I would share some of the songs I'm currently writing to. Keep in mind my WIP is about drug use, death and lifelong friendships.

High For This by The Weeknd
It's Not Your Birthday Anymore by Morrisey
Counting What Ifs by boyChild
Ecstasy by JJ
Dark Star by Jaymes Young (That many remixes of this song are great as well, especially the Milkman Remix)
Nothing Else Is Real by Makintosh Braun
The Drift by Blackmill (Actually, I listen to ALL THE BLACKMILL lol)
Running Up That Hill by Placebo
Spectrum by Zedd
I Can't Stop by Flux Pavilion (For only having 3 words in it this song is awesome)
Not On Drugs by Tove Lo

Actually, none of these songs are rap...just some dubstep, dance, and more melancholy songs.

Last Thoughts

No matter how you set your mood whether it is by music, ambient noise, or clearing a space in your head; I think it shows in an authors writing. I also think it also bleeds through in research and other papers. I recently finished up my writing option, which is required to graduate from law school. I could tell the sections I wrote to ambient noise compared to the introduction and conclusion which I wrote to a long mix by D.Veloped. Those sections had a much more lively spirit and drew the reader in to the heart of the subject matter which was my goal. Even if the rest of the paper had to be a more detached and academic.

Let me know in the comments what you like to listen to while writing, blogging, or just living life. If you have a playlist I would love it if you could include the link! I'm always trying to discover new artists and songs.

Discussion: Book Blasts

While I was perusing twitter the topic of book blasts came up and I felt like discussing them on the blog since they have become a rather polarizing topic. Some bloggers love them and others hate them with a vehement passion. The biggest complaint I've seen is that:

Books blasts don't offer any unique or exclusive content
A book blast is just the same information offered on multiple blogs on the same day. There isn't anything new or any reason to visit other blogs on the blast because it is just the same information.

While I agree, it is mostly the same thing over and over, there can be different content on each blog. Different excerpts from the novel being promoted or different quotes/photos to break up the monotony. I think it depends on who is hosting the blast as to how much different content will be featured on each blog.

Book blasts only seem to focus on New Adult books or books that aren't in my favorite genre
This is something I've heard multiple times and I don't know if it's true or not. I can't find any evidence supporting this hypothesis that New Adults are more represented in book blasts. I do think, from what I've seen, the majority of books featured in blasts are self-published. Maybe self-published is what people really mean when they say "books outside their genre".

In my opinion though, it is self-published books that benefit the most from Book Blasts. The internet can be a big, scary place and without the help of a publisher books can be listed on Amazon and never heard from again. It is up to the authors to do all the marketing and be the hype-person for their novel. That is really hard! Book blasts are an easy way of getting a variety of bloggers who would probably never reply to the author's review request to feature and take an interest in their novel.

They are annoying, I hate seeming them on everyone's blogs
Isn't that the point of a blast? Have the novels information featured on a multitude of different blogs to get the word out about new titles? Book's that are on blast should be featured on a wide variety of blogs because, I think, Book Blasts are really meant for non-bloggers.

As book bloggers we often forget that the bookish community is a whole lot bigger then our little corner of the blogosphere. This isn't a criticism, merely something I've noticed. Before I became a blogger, back when I was just someone who really liked to read, I rarely ventured away from Goodreads. In my Pre-goodreads days I got almost all of my books from Half Price Books, Powells, and my mom's or sister's shelves. It would have taken a lot for me to notice a book. Something that would have caught my notice would have been 10 or 20 sites featuring a new book all on the same day.

  Last Thoughts
These are just some of the main point's I've heard in the polarizing discussion on book blasts. So tell me: do you love them? Hate them? Have my explanations and arguments swayed you one way or another? Tell me in the comments!

In interest of full disclosure I haven't participated in a book blast since December when I promoted The Offering by Kimberly Derting (a book I would have been more then happy to feature book blast or no). I'm not sure if my lack of participation is due to a decline in book blasts or if I haven't had space in my schedule, I'm thinking it's a little of both.

Author Interview

Hello Emily!

Thanks so much for having us here at Falling for YA. We’re so excited to be here! If it’s all right with you, we’ll tag team these answers. And we’ll do this without talking to each other first. Should be interesting to see what comes out. J

How did the two of you meet and decide to write a novel together?

Kelley: You know, I can’t really remember how we ‘met’. I think I was Author, Cassie Mae’s, critique partner, and so was Jenny, and then we formed this critique group with a number of other authors. I read Jen’s first work, a YA Paranormal, and thought it was just amazing (I will admit, I was quite intimidated sending her my work.) I’ll let Jen talk about how we decided to write a book together.

Jenny: Haha, that’s funny. I was really intimidated by Kelley after reading her YA Fantasy: Fraction of Stone. (Which is published now, btw.) As for deciding to write together we had to do a short story together for the AtoZ challenge and after posting it our CP’s didn’t know who wrote which character. It gave me the idea that maybe we’d work well together for a collaboration. So I emailed Kelley and asked if she wanted to write a book with me, and thankfully she said yes.

Who was your favorite character to write? Why?

Kelley: I think the easiest/obvious character for me to say would be Lucy, the younger sister. I was responsible for writing her point of view. It was definitely a challenge, as I have never been a younger sister. But I really enjoyed looking at everything from a younger sister’s perspective. It was also SUPER fun to write about Charlie, the older sister, from Lucy’s point of view. Because while I had the privilege of knowing what Charlie was thinking, Lucy didn’t. That was a fun dynamic.

If I were to pick a secondary character, I’d have to say I really enjoyed writing scenes with Charlie’s three best friends in them. It was really fun to develop these characters, to make them a group of friends, but also to make sure they were each individuals.

Jenny: Charlie’s voice comes pretty easy for me. She kind of just blurts out what she’s thinking, and I write it down. LOL. But if I had to pick a secondary character it would actually be Nan and Pops. Pops is loosely based on my dad. He grew up in Louisiana on a farm and is a man of few words, but has a soft heart. And Nan is loosely based off my father’s mother. She was a very strong woman who spoke her mind and worked really hard on their farm. So writing their dialogue and actions felt very natural to me.

If Road to Somewhere had a theme song what would it be?

Kelley: Actually, ROAD TO SOMEWHERE has a lot to do with music. Both Charlie and Lucy are musically inclined (Charlie’s voice, Lucy with piano) and so there are a number of songs referenced in the book itself, some well known, some not so well known, and one that the girls write together. If I were to pick a theme song for Lucy, I’d choose the song she plays on the piano, Wild Horses, by Natasha Bedingfield. It describes Lucy perfectly. I heard it when I was working out while we were writing this book and I knew it had to have a place in ROAD TO SOMEWHERE.

Jenny: Like Kelley said RTS has a lot of musical elements to it. For Charlie Stronger by Kelly Clarkson is the song her and her friends sing for the competition. It’s fitting because throughout the book she feels like she might not be able to go on, but because she’s strong nothing will hold her down.

What was the last book you read and loved?
Kelley: First, thank you for not asking about my most favorite book. I don’t do favorites. It’s so hard to pick! Haha. I really loved EFFORTLESS WITH YOU by Lizzy Charles. But I also just read RUN FOR THE ROSES by Rachel Schieffelbein. Cassie Mae’s work is always super fun too. (I have a special place in my heart for HOW TO DATE A NERD) And Theresa Paolo’s (NEVER) AGAIN is such a great tale of young love returned. So there’s… a lot more than one. Haha

Jenny: Haha, Kelley just listed a lot of the books I’ve read recently. One book I’m reading with my boys is called Inventor’s Secret by Chad Morris (no relation. J) And it’s a Middle Grade book, but it’s so much fun. The second book just came out and I’m really excited to read it with my boys. Thank you SO much for having us on your blog. It’s been fun.

Emily: Thanks Ladies for stopping by, it was great having both of you!

A promising and popular student in middle school, Leon Harris has become a committed "slacker" but with graduation approaching and his middle school girlfriend possibly returning to town, Leon's best friend Stan, who claims to be Satan, helps him get back on the right track--for a price.

Book Spine Poetry

I've been seeing a lot of Book Spine Poetry lately. Rachel over at Beauty and the Bookshelf does Sunday Spinetry every so often. And Michelle at Book Briefs has a giveaway as part of the #TBRreadathon going on that has to do with book spine poetry. Okay, that's only two examples, but it made me want to discuss Book Spine Poetry and try my hand at it.
Emily attempts book spine poetry
 Where I belong, unremembered
Forever
 In the after

Well...that was my first attempt. I realized it was a bit short so I tried again! This time with 5 books.

Shattered souls shift the dead tossed waves.
Pandemonium!
Under the Never Sky.

Ha! That was a bit better. Look, I even added an exclamation mark. That makes it look more like an actual poem.

A Deadly little secret, born wicked.
The symptoms of my insanity...
Oh! Cruel Beauty; No one else can have you.

This time I took some creative license and added my own words to the poem to make it flow better.

Ten white lines, every other day.
Poison, Wither, Sever.
Until I Die.

This is my favorite poem. It uses the largest number of books, seven, but most of the titles are one word so the poem still feels short.

While making these I noticed most book spine poems are short. Which makes me want to write one that is like 40 books long. Maybe next time!

What is your opinion on book spine poetry? Do you love it, hate it, are you indifferent? Do you think it takes too much time and isn't worth doing as part of an entry in to a giveaway? I want to know. Tell me in the comments! Also, if you've ever posted about book spine poetry leave links to your poems.

Mistwalker by Saundra Mitchell

Mistwalker
Author: Saundra Mitchell
Publisher: Harcourt Children's Books
Publication Date: February 4, 2014

Review:
I picked up this book solely because there is a lighthouse on the cover. My sister and I have this strange obsession with lighthouses, so when I saw a preview for the cover of Mistwalker I knew I had to have it! I am glad that I was drawn in by the pretty cover though because the story inside was just as lovely.

By far my favorite thing about Mistwalker was the setting. It is set in a poor Maine fishing village. Mitchell excels at setting a scene and really drawing you in to a place. I loved her descriptions of the sea, the town, and the island with the lighthouse. I really felt like I was there with Willa. When the fog rolled in, I could feel it in my bones.

Willa is a tough girl who has been through a lot. After her brother dies her lifelong plans fall apart. Mistwalker deals with Willa handling these changing plans, coming to terms with her brothers’ death, and figuring out the mystery of the Grey Man who lives in the lighthouse.

Mistwalker is written in dual POV. The narration shifts between Willa and Grey. I loved the chapters written from Grey’s POV. He has been trapped by a curse, living at the lighthouse for the last 100 years. His voice was very distinct from Willa’s. The chapters written from his POV almost had a poetic quality. Grey was just the right amount of hopeful and melancholy. Willa and Grey were great foils to one another, while they were so different; they still had so much in common.

My one main problem with Mistwalker was the legal portion of the story. There is a scene where the prosecutor comes to Willa’s house and says she has decided not to bring a case before the Grand Jury because she isn’t sure she would be able to get an indictment. There is a joke in law school that a Grand Jury would indict a ham sandwich. This isn’t even an exaggeration. Grand Juries really will indict anything. An indictment only says that there is evidence to bring a case to trial. If I didn’t have prior knowledge of the legal system though this probably wouldn’t have bothered me as much as it did.

Overall, Mistwalker is a beautifully written story. The prose, setting, and characters were all very well done. I will definitely be checking out Mitchell’s other novels now.

Her Dark Curiosity by Megan Shepherd

Her Dark Curiosity

Author: Megan Shepherd
Publisher: Balzer + Bray

Publication Date: January 28, 2014
Goodreads ♥ Amazon

Review:
The Madman’s Daughter was the creepiest debut I read in 2013. I mean, the opening scene is the vivisection of a rabbit. It doesn’t get much creepier then that! I had high hopes for the sequel especially when I heard that it would be loosely based on The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.

Her Dark Curiosity begins a year or so after Juliet returned from the island her father was living and experimenting on. The events changed her in a lot of ways and I loved seeing how her character handled all of the things she saw now and how that has affected her returned to London. I really liked Juliet in The Madman’s Daughter and I came to like her even more in Her Dark Curiosity. In this novel she must come to terms with both sides of her personality her animal side and her human logical mind. It was a fun dichotomy.

One thing I wasn’t too keen on was the resurrection of the love triangle from book one. I thought with the death of Edward, then Montgomery pushing her off in a boat, that Juliet would get some time to herself. Unfortunately, that isn’t how things pan out and I think the back and forth took away from the interesting bits of the story.

I did love the Jekyll and Hyde aspect to the story though. Any problems I had with the love triangle were completely overshadowed by how much I enjoyed this exploration of character. It wasn’t just Edward either Juliet also has a huge Jekyll and Hyde complex.

Overall, I enjoyed Her Dark Curiosity. I thought it was a great continuation of The Madman’s Daughter and the ending set the story up for an epic finale which will deal with Frankenstein!

Why I Don't Mind Insta-Love

Last night I finished a book, rated it, and as per my usual I checked Goodreads to see if other bloggers agreed, or had differing opinions from me. The book will remain nameless, but I found a lot of reviews bashing it because it had Instant Love. This got me thinking, what has everyone got against Instant Love? Am I the last blogger who doesn’t hate it?

Insta-Love is not realistic

Actually, it is realistic. If not for Insta-Love I wouldn’t be here today! My parents met and were engaged within 2 weeks, they’ve been married almost 30 years. My Grandparents met and were engaged within a month. Both of their loves were instant. They knew they had met that special someone and just went with it.

I am not saying that everyone meets and has a whirlwind romance. I’m just saying that it does happen, more often then you think. And I’m glad both my parents and grandparents believed in insta-love because without it I probably wouldn’t be here.

Characters aren’t as fleshed out with Insta-Love

I think this is a generalization. Whether the characters meet and fall in love instantly, were dating prior to the novel, or got together in the middle of the story. The problem isn’t the love. The problem is the characters themselves. An author has to make you fall in love with both parties and give you a reason to care about them both independently and together.

I think this is the kiss of death for Insta-Love. The real reason people dislike it so much isn’t because they don’t believe in instant love or connections. Readers don’t like Instant love because they don’t care about the characters as individuals before they become a couple.

I like the Slow Burn

Me too. I love a long, drawn out romance. The kind where you’re never really sure if the characters will get together or not. But again, this is more about the characters themselves. I’ve become invested in both of them as individuals so I want to see them as a couple. I think romance with Instant love can be just as good as a slow burn if the author makes you care about the characters and their relationship.

So what I’m trying to say is. Hello my name is Emily and I don’t mind Instant Love. Tell me in the comments your opinions on Instant love!

The Iron Traitor by Julie Kagawa

The Iron Traitor (Call of the Forgotten #2)

Author: Julie Kagawa
Publisher: HarlequinTEEN
Publication Date: Oct 29, 2013
Goodreads ♥ Amazon

Review:

One of my biggest pet peeves is when authors spend too much time explaining to you what happened in the last book. This bothered me when I read The Fiery Heart by Richelle Mead. It actually almost ruined the book for me. And this re-capping bothered me again in The Iron Traitor. So much time was spent reminding me what happened in The Lost Prince that I kept wondering when the action was finally going to begin in The Iron Traitor. Then when thingsfinally started to take a turn in the right direction Kagawa leaves us on a terrible cliffhanger.

I don’t think I would have been bothered by all of the reminders if I had better connected with the characters. The second book should make me love the characters even more then the first book did. In the The Lost Prince I was introduced to Ethan, Keirran, Annwyl, and Kenzie. This book should have made me love them. Instead, I found myself getting annoyed with Kenzie constantly butting in; Annwyl playing the fragile flower, and Keirran blindly charging in to situations before thinking. The only person who didn’t get on my nerves was Ethan.

One of the things I loved the most about The Lost Prince was that some of our favorite characters played a role in the story. In this installment Ash, Meagan, Puck, and Grimm do make brief appearances, but they are very brief.

Honestly, in a lot of ways The Iron Traitor was just a space filler to get us to book three. Nothing new really happened in the plot. I think we are meant to have fallen for Annwyl and cared about the relationship between Annwyl and Keirran. Unfortunately, I never found their romance believable. I didn’t understand why these two characters wanted to be together so badly, or why Keirran loved Annwyl so much. She has never really given Keirran a reason to care. I actually wished they would have just let her fade.

Okay, okay, that came out a bit harsh. But honestly, I don’t really care for her as a character. I do hope she grows some kind of a backbone in book 3 though. I also hope we finally get to the mystery of the Lost Fey and their queen.

Despite not really enjoying this installment I will probably continue the series. I am a sucker for The Iron Fey. It was my guilty pleasure and this spin-off series has the general iron fey structure. Although, without the same heart and soul. Hopefully Kagawa can make me love these characters in the next book. I know if a writer can do it, she is more then up to the challenge.

This series is so original and I need to know how it ends!

This is a re-telling of The Nutcracker! I love love that ballet and have really high hopes for this novel.

A Sarah Rees Brennan re-telling of A Tale of Two Cities, I'm not sure my heart will be able to stand this.

I loved the first book in this series and can't wait to go back to the world of the Twixt

This sounds awesome! Is her boyfriend really dead? Did he move? What's with his look alike. I need to know and August is very far away.

Top 10 of 2013: Book Boyfriends

Ladies and gentleman after much consideration and google image searching of hot guys. I present to you, the much anticipated, Top 10 Book Boyfriends of 2013!

You said it, Abby Lee Miller, but these guys made the cut!

1. River West- Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by April Genevieve Tucholke
Oh River! I never trusted you but you were still oh so swoony! He has that rich, east coast prepster thing going for him. I just can't resist that as evidenced by Gansey on last years list. At least I know my type rich, dark, and slightly crazy.
Death- Endless Knight by Kresley Cole
I love me a doomed ship and this looks like one of those. Death and Evie have this epic shared history, and he is so lonely. I just want it to work out for him. For my fancast I picked Freddie Stroma best know ,probably, for playing McClaggen in Harry Potter. "I wouldn't mind getting on a first name basis with him, if you know what I mean". 10 Points for Gryffindor if you recognized that quote.
3 Ink - Indelible by Dawn Metcalf
Despite a borderline cliche entrance I knew I was going to love Ink! He has that distant, not quite brooding, air about him and I just couldn't get enough of it! I need the sequel now.
4 Adrian Ivashkov - The Indigo Spell & The Fiery Heart by Richelle Mead
I hadn't seen Douglas Booth fan cast as Adrian Ivashkov before, but I can totally see it! He's got that effortless hot thing going on. Also I'm digging the 5 'o clock shadow *swoons*

I also wanted to congratulate Adrian on being the only book boyfriend to make it on the list 2 years in a row! Lets take a moment to celebrate that.

5 Warner - Unravel Me by Tahreh Mafi
All of the Chapter 62 hype was accurate and the man that made it all possible was Warner! There was no way we wouldn't be on this years list!
6 Jackson Tate - Rush by Eve Silver
I was hesitant about reading Rush because it had aliens. I should not have been concerned! It was an all round awesome read. And Jackson Tate made it all the better. He was secretive, a bad boy, brooding... meaning he was exactly my type!
7 Isaiah - Crash Into You by Katie McGarry
I think the guy on the book cover is perfect for Isaiah; but whoever that CW hottie on the right is...yum! He is also a great cast! He's pulling off the shaved head and tattoo's without coming off as scary.
8 Ethan Landry- The Rules for Disappearing by Ashley Elston
Ethan is a Louisiana farm boy. I have learned living in SD that farm boys never look like this guy! But a girl can dream! Out of everyone on my list Ethan was genuinely the best boyfriend out of the lot! Supportive, kind, and willing to do anything to help Meg.
9 Naji - The Pirate's Wish by Cassandra Rose Clarke
Naji is an assassin so the entire time I was reading I pictured him like this. lol. Not exactly swoony but I love the way he treats Ananna! And his character development made him a great male lead.
10 Chris Henderson - That One Summer by CJ Duggan
I just love the Onslow boys I wish I could scoop them up and put them all on the list. After That One Summer though, Chris is my favorite! As CJ put it male model Adam Cowie is wickedly handsome and beautifully broody. The perfect Chris Henderson!

Honorable Mention
The Darkling - Siege & Storm by Leigh Bardugo
Okay, I know I said Adrian was the only book boyfriend to make it on the list two years in a row; but I would be remiss if The Darkling wasn't on here somewhere! Afterall, I did represent him in the Summer Crush Tournament! After Siege and Storm my feels are all muddled but he is still definitely one of my favorites and after the spoiler Leigh gave us (look below) I have high hopes he will make a comeback in Ruin and Rising! Plus, I do love a doomed ship!

A Darkling/Alina snippet from Ruin and Rising courtesy of Leigh for the holidays!
“Why waste my anger on you when the fault is mine? I should have anticipated another betrayal from you, one more mad grasp at some kind of childish ideal. But I seem to be a victim of my own wishes where you are concerned.” His expression hardened. “What have you come here for, Alina?”
I answered him honestly. “I wanted to see you.”
I caught the briefest glimpse of surprise before his face shuttered again. “There are two thrones on that dais. You could see me any time you liked.”

The Fiery Heart by Richelle Mead

The Fiery Heart

Author: Richelle Mead
Publisher: Razorbill
Publication Date: November 19, 2013
Goodread♥ Amazon

Review:
Bookish Confession: I don’t pre-order books. If I want a book I’ll buy it the day it comes out or wait a couple weeks. I’ve only pre-ordered 2 books and one of them is The Fiery Heart. I was excited that the novel would have both Sydney and Adrian’s perspectives. I expected new insight in to their characters, and more action. Instead I got something totally different and was a little disappointed by The Fiery Heart.

I was the most about reading this story from Adrian’s perspective. Adrian has been my favorite character in the Vampire Academy/Bloodlines series since Rose met him in Frostbite. Adrian is witty, understanding, moody, artsy. I expected his thoughts to reflect the character I have come to love. Instead Adrian felt like a different person. His thought’s weren’t witty and funny, occasionally some of the things he said were cute and I chuckled but the camaraderie I felt with his character when the books were from Sydney’s perspective was missing. It was almost like Adrian had to think of an Adrian response to a situation and then say the words rather then having them flow naturally. It’s a hard thing to explain but I just expected something more from Adrian then what I got.

I also thought this installment lacked the action of the previous novels. There was a lot of planning, talking, kissing, avoiding Sydney’s sister, and more planning. The entire plot led up to the last scene which, because of painful amounts of foreshadowing, could be seen coming a mile away. This novel felt like a set up for the next one. There were also huge sections devoted to information dumps about the plot line from previous books. Don’t get me wrong, I like a little bit of a reminder, but it felt like the first 70 pages were a re-cap of what had already happened.

I did like that there was a lot of kissing in The Fiery Heart. Sydney and Adrian are a couple you really want to root for. They’ve got so much working against them and still they are crazy about one another. I like that because of her relationship with Adrian, Sydney has changed so much throughout this series. It was interesting to have Zoe there as a reminder of just how much Sydney’s Alchemist beliefs have changed.

Overall, I enjoyed The Fiery Heart and will definitely be picking up the sequel, Silver Shadows, especially after that terrible cliff we were left on. I hope that in the next book Adrian feels more natural, and Sydney can stay strong because I have a feeling the next novel will be intense.
